Our Vision and Values
Moral ‘Golden’ Values
We walk many paths in our life and often cross many bridges. In acknowledgement of the strength and integrity sometimes needed when negotiating life’s journey, our school proudly uses the emblem of Bickleigh Bridge. In recognition of the five arches that support the bridge, we have identified five Christian values which guide our thinking, behaviour and form the basis of our culture.
Our parents and pupils are involved in promoting values and recognising where others are ‘living the values’. Our values have been selected after consultation with pupils, staff, governors and parents as values which are important within the school community and which will be important throughout life.
Respect
This value is at the core of everything we do in school. It underpins learning through behaviour and one’s attitude to the people and the world around them. We want our whole school community to respect each other.
Responsibility
This may be shown as making good decisions about our own behaviour, taking responsibility for our learning, being independent, bringing the correct equipment and PE kit to school, handing homework in on time or caring for others. Responsibility also includes thinking about being a good citizen and caring for our environment.
Honesty
Honest people tell the truth despite consequences and voice their opinions in a kind and thoughtful way.
Collaboration
Collaboration is teamwork, interacting and joining in, listening and co-operating with each other, lending each other a helping hand, working together, trust and support, helping one another, not letting other people down, sharing each other’s ideas and demonstrating compromise.
Kindness
Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. Kindness means that you treat everyone the best that you can. No matter who they are or how you feel about them you treat them with fairness and respect. We might think of nice things to do and say all day but when we act, that is kindness.
Performance Values
Our performance values link explicitly to learning behaviours which support learning and promote engagement through self-regulation. At Bickleigh we think of the learning behaviours as being like groups of ‘learning muscles’. Just as we can build our physical muscles by the right kinds of exercise, we can exercise our learning muscles to develop their strength and stamina. Developing one’s learning muscles is not restricted to school – learning continues at home and throughout adult life, therefore supporting our pupils to ‘live life in all it’s fullness’.
Resilience
Pupils are given opportunities to improve this through absorption, managing distractions, noticing small details and persevering.
Resourcefulness
Pupils are given opportunities to improve this by questioning, making links in their learning, demonstrating imagination and reasoning and by applying logic and deduction.
Reflectiveness
Pupils are given opportunities to improve this thorough planning their learning, revising these plans, distilling this information and thinking about where else they might use this knowledge. Pupils are also encouraged to think about how they learn best.
Vision
Our vision for education is deeply Christian, with Jesus’ promise of ‘life in all its fullness’ at its heart.
In line with the Church of England’s role as the established Church, our vision is for the common good of the whole community.
Bickleigh-on-Exe Primary School aims to serve its local and wider community by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice. We encourage an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith and, promote a Christian vision and values through the experiences we offer all pupils. Our vision and values are based on and derive from what Jesus described in the Bible as “live life in all its fullness”, (John 10:10).
Our vision: “Challenge Explore Flourish Together” is used to plan and evaluate all that we do. Our Local Governing Body, staff and pupils have agreed the following definitions to help us deliver these common goals.
Challenge
We encourage pupils to ‘reach for the highest’. We create opportunities for pupils to push themselves, to try new things and not be afraid of making mistakes.
Explore
Our school is a place where we instil and promote curiosity. Pupils are encouraged to question ‘why?’ and supported to explore their understanding and beliefs.
Flourish
We want all our pupils to flourish and be the best they can be. We believe that a flourishing life is diverse, connected, outward-looking and gives to others.
Together
We focus on the diversity, well-being and progress of every child where all members of our community are equal. We celebrate our differences and strive to remove barriers and disadvantages which people may face. Our pupils are taught that they can achieve so much more when they work together.
