Class 2

Welcome back to all our families, Class 2 are looking forward to a busy summer term, enjoying more time in our outdoor areas and looking forward to events like sports day later in the term. We have started the topic ‘Travel and Transport’ looking at different methods of transport and how they have changed over time. The children are learning about the life of George Stephenson, as the inventor of ‘The Rocket’ train. We will continue to learn about trains and explore photos of the old Cadeleigh Station and what happened to it. We will end the topic with a trip to the Mid Devon Railway Centre, to see for ourselves the buildings and track that are still there, and of course to have some train rides!

After half term, our topic will be the UK and Australia, comparing the geography and wildlife in the different continents. We will be learning about conservation projects in Australia to protect some of the worlds’ most diverse animal species and plants and thinking about how we can help to look after our planet by being more sustainable.

Science this summer will focus on living things, studying different species and looking at habitats. We will tie this in with our topic work on Australia, learning about some of the amazing animals that live in the Daintree Rainforest and create our own Steve Irwin inspired documentaries!

Maths for Year 1 this term will start with multiplication and division and move on to simple fractions, numbers to 100, money and time. Year 2 are learning about fractions, time, statistics and position and direction and will be completing end of KS1 assessments in June.

In English, the children continue to learn in their Read Write Inc groups, where reading books will be sent home at the end of each book unit. Yr1 children will be taking part in the Phonics Screening Test (PSC) in early June and results will be communicated to parents. At the end of each half term, we will join as a class for English lessons together, as well as a focus on some of our other subjects like Art, Computing, DT, Music, Science and PSHE.

The children will testing different ‘dips and dippers’ in DT, evaluating shop bought products and then planning, creating and evaluating their own. We will learn about prepping food safely and hygienically and using kitchen equipment responsibly in small groups. This project will support our whole school focus on healthy eating.

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) will include exploring healthy choices, feelings and emotions and relationships.

In our RE work this term we will aim to answer the questions Who do Christians say made the world? and How should we care for the world and for others and why does it matter? We will take the opportunity to walk to the church in some fine weather to look at the outside of the building, the grounds and to see the stained-glass windows. We hope to interview a Christian friend of the school, asking some of our own questions about Christianity.

PE this term will focus on outdoor games like rounders and cricket, playing simple versions of the games and then practising relays and throwing for sports day. Let’s hope for some lovely weather!
