Class 2
Welcome back to school, we hope you have had a fun and restful summer. Class 2 have settled into their classroom and learning areas and have some really interesting learning to kick start their Autumn Term.
We start with the topic ‘Fire Fire’. The children will learn about the Great Fire of London and ask and answer questions using artefacts and sources. Class 2 will think about what it must have been like in 1666, look at the diary of Samuel Pepys and have a go writing their own diary entry. We will find out how the fire grew so large and have fun building new streets of London that can withstand fire better. The website https://www.fireoflondon.org.uk/game/ can be explored at home if you wish. The BBC Bitesize website also has some fun videos and facts: The Great Fire of London - BBC Bitesize
After Half Term, our Topic focus will be on Christmas and putting together our Nativity production. Science lessons over the whole autumn term will focus on exploring and investigating the properties of materials.
In English, Class 2 have started with the text ‘The Great Fire of London’ by Emma Adams and James Weston Lewis. We are sequencing and retelling events, writing different types of sentences, writing speech and using the conjunctions ‘and’ and ‘but’. The children will then go into their Read Write Inc groups, where reading books will be sent home at the end of each book ‘unit’. Later in the term we will rejoin again as a class to study other texts.
Our Great Fire of London topic leads on to our Design and Technology. The children will create Tudor houses on fire, whilst learning to measure, mark and cut materials, and use a range of cutting and tearing techniques. Please send in any cereal boxes or boxes that could be stacked to create the shape shown from the end of September.
Maths this term will start with place value and addition and subtraction, with year 1 focussing on numbers to 10. As a school we start with a ‘know it’ activity, then if the children are confident, they can move on to ‘deepen it’ and then challenges with more of a reasoning and problem solving focus. Class 2 will also look at shape, just before Christmas.
Class 2 will enjoy learning songs for our Christmas production and also will use instruments to help identify the beat and will start to recognise the changes in timbre, dynamics and pitch.
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) will include learning on keeping healthy, staying safe, relationships, being responsible, feelings and emotions and computer safety. We will also look at what bullying is during Anti-Bullying Week.
Class 2 will continue to explore the uses of ICT/computing to support their learning in the form of educational games, using the Chrome books and Beebots. As a whole class, we will also be watching videos and using interactive websites to help us answer questions about our work across the curriculum.
Christianity and Judaism will be studied during RE in the Autumn term. The children will learn about what it means to belong to a faith or community, Harvest and later, Christmas and Hanukkah. We look forward to sharing these festivals with you!
This year the school has an exciting new Art resource called ‘KAPOW’ and this term we will be focussing on painting and mixed media. After half term we will move on to making decorations for Christmas.
Class 2 children will also have access to Continuous Provision, with learning opportunities around the classroom and other learning spaces that will support their learning needs and link to the formal learning taking place. The Year 2 children will have slightly less of this time and will be expected to complete certain tasks across the week.
